Question 1: Several subscribers have inquired about the appropriate use of CPT code 88361 (Morphometric analysis, tumor immunohistochemistry (eg, Her-2/neu, estrogen receptor/progesterone receptor), quantitative or semiquantitative). In particular, subscribers have asked whether 88361 can be used to report manual methods.
Answer 1: The following instructions regarding 88361 were published as part of the latest version of the CCI Manual.
Beginning January 1, 2004, CPT code 88361 should only be used to report quantitative immunocytochemistry by digital cellular imaging, i.e., computer software analysis of stained microscopic slides.
