In March of 2006 we discussed Medicare's new Pay for Performance (P4P) initiatives and how they may affect clinical laboratories. Today, we will summarize the new Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI), which will replace the Physician Voluntary Reporting Program (PVRP) currently in effect. CMS will use this new system to award participants with bonus payments of up to 1.5% of their total Medicare reimbursement. Although the PQRI applies only to physicians, it is a good indicator of how CMS plans to implement P4P for laboratories and other providers in the future.
