Welcome to the third installment of our four-part series concerning the vocabulary of regulatory compliance. This week's briefing will discuss the many terms and definitions of coding. Health care providers and payers use codes to indicate what, why, where, and how particular tests and procedures are performed. The federal government, through the enactment of HIPAA, requires both providers and payers to use standardized code sets for these purposes. The following discussion should, at the very least, introduce our subscribers to the numerous code sets employed in the health care industry. Next week, we will conclude our vocabulary of compliance series with an examination of the terms and definitions associated with Medicare coverage requirements.
