CodeMap® Compliance Briefing: 02/15/2008
Editor's Welcome:
The inclusion of a new Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) in the 2008 CPT has created its fair share of confusion. The CPT now includes a BMP with ionized calcium (80047) and a BMP with total calcium (80048). Some providers mistakenly assumed the new BMP with ionized calcium replaced the BMP with total calcium. This is not the case, and most laboratories should offer both panels. Beyond that, many more providers have failed to take into consideration the many compliance issues associated with the new BMP. This week's CodeMap Compliance Briefing will investigate these issues including physician choice, medical necessity, appropriate ordering mechanisms, and the danger of Civil False Claims Act liability due to the increased reimbursement associated with the BMP with ionized calcium.
Sincerely,
Gregory Root, Esq.
