Tentative Payment for New 2003 CPT Codes for Lab Services

As the year-end approches, chargemasters and coding should be reviewed and updated to agree with changes in the CPT and Medicare coding policies. Twelve new codes for clinical laboratory tests were established by the Current Procedural Technology (CPT) Editorial Panel this year and will become effective January 1, 2003. The new codes and tentative Medicare payment levels are presented below so you can get an early start updating your chargemaster, requisitions and pricing strategies.

2003 MEDICARE REIMBURSEMENT
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) hosted a public meeting on August 5, 2002, during which interested parties presented payment recommendations for the new codes. CMS will issue a Program Memorandum (PM) with final payment determinations for the twelve new test codes November 8, 2002. No significant changes are expected in the final document.
