On July 1, 2009, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued the 2010 Physician Fee Schedule Proposed Rule for services furnished as of January 1, 2010. Included in the Proposed Rule is a detailed discussion of when a physician signature is required on laboratory test requisitions and diagnostic test orders. Apparently, CMS has received numerous inquiries and questions on this issue and has decided it is time to clarify previously published policy. CMS will accept comments on the information summarized below until August 31, 2009.
