Friday Compliance Briefing-2003 Clinical Laboratory Fee Schedule

CMS issued a program memorandum to all Medicare Intermediaries and Carriers on November 8th detailing changes to the 2003 Clinical Lab Fee Schedule. Actual fee schedules are to be available on November 18th. During the next few weeks we will discuss what the changes mean and the issues regarding coding, payment, and compliance that you need to know as you get ready for 2003. The issuance of the final rule for the 2003 Physician Fee Schedule has been postponed. Thus, we still do not know what changes will apply to Pathologist payments. 2003 Clinical Laboratory Fee Schedule
Medicare payment for clinical laboratory tests performed after Jan. 1, 2003 will increase by 1.1%. This automatic increase is the first in 5 years and resulted from Congress's inaction on a final budget bill for fiscal 2003. The national minimum payment for pap smears will also increase 1.1%....
