CodeMap® Compliance Briefing: 01/21/2010

Editor's Welcome:

Since the beginning of 2010, we have been bombarded with questions concerning the 5 drug screening procedure codes listed in the 2010 Medicare Laboratory Fee Schedule. Unfortunately, we were unable to effectively answer many of these questions due to the lack of guidance from CMS and its contractors. Now, we have some good news and some bad news concerning these codes. Good news is that CMS has issued applicable guidance in the form of a MLN Matters article. Bad News is that the guidance creates as many questions as it answers. This week's CodeMap® Compliance Briefing first details the contents of CMS' recent guidance concerning drug screening and the appropriate way to code these procedures. Second, this briefing will examine the many questions that still remain. As you will see, CMS will need to issue further guidance to clarify the many issues that continue to surround the submission of claims for drug screening tests.

Sincerely,

Gregory Root, Esq.
