Increased emphasis on chronic pain management has resulted in a dramatic increase in both drug screening and quantification as a tool in managing patients receiving pain medications. We discussed new HCPCS codes and guidance for qualitative drug screening codes in our January 22, 2010 Compliance Briefing. Today we will discuss the proper use of quantitative drug codes for reporting drug tests used to monitor and maintain appropriate therapeutic drug levels, and ensure patients are complying with recommended drug therapy.
