The ICD-10-CM implementation date appears firmly fixed by CMS for October 1, 2013. The tone of their articles to date seem to indicate there will be no extensions, grace periods or other delays allowed. In fact, the first ICD-10-CM related compliance date is less than 2 years away. On January 1, 2012, standards for electronic health transactions change from Version 4010/4010A1 to Version 5010. Unlike Version 4010/4010A1, Version 5010 accommodates the ICD-10-CM code structure. This change will allow providers to begin using ICD-10-CM codes to test their billing systems. Please note that while providers may begin testing ICD-10-CM codes on January 1, 2012, they are not required to use the new diagnosis codes until October 1, 2013.
