It's time for another new acronym, namely MAAA for Multianalyte Assays with Algorithmic Analysis. MAAA is the term used by the AMA's CPT staff to describe what has been referred to by the FDA as In Vitro Diagnostic Multivariate Index Assays (IVDMIAs). Payers need a better way to identify and code such assays so they can develop reasonable payment and coverage policies. Palmetto GBA, the Medicare contractor for California and Nevada, has already created a system of its own, the MolDx program. As you will remember, the MolDx program was created to assign identifying codes for both MAAAs, as well as molecular pathology procedures presently reported with "code stacks." Today, we will....
