Since Medicare severely reduced payment levels for quantitative, definitive drug testing, a number of laboratories have created new specialized drug testing procedures in order to differentiate their services from competitors. In order to report and bill for these new tests, some have chosen to obtain Proprietary Laboratory Analysis (PLA) codes from the AMA which are now listed on the Medicare Clinical Laboratory Fee Schedule. Today, we will summarize existing rules for drug test coding and examine the many new PLA codes now available for ordering unique testing procedures from various laboratories.
