Dialysis Access Maintenance Coding - Part 1 - Fisulagrams

Stacie Buck, RHIA, CCS-P, RCC, CIC

On the surface coding for dialysis access procedures may seem simple, but coding for these procedures seems to remain problematic. In addition to challenges faced with proper documentation of these interventions, coders have witnessed several changes over the past few years including deletion of procedure specific G codes, to new CPT® codes to changes in NCCI coding edits concerning these procedures. This 2 part article discusses the current guidelines for coding the many facets of dialysis access maintenance cases including accessing the graft for a fistulagram and various methods for declotting of the graft.
