CMS recently finalized the 2018 Medicare Laboratory Fee Schedule, which is the first fee schedule created completely pursuant to the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014 (PAMA). We have discussed several times this fall how PAMA will result in a fee schedule based upon private payer reimbursement rates. Today, we will discuss another significant reimbursement development created by PAMA. On January 1, 2018, PAMA will affect how Medicare pays for panels containing automated tests. This briefing will review how Medicare reimburses for these panels now and how Medicare will pay for these panels starting next year.
